Google's AI Overviews—the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results—are currently misinterpreting certain search terms as conversational prompts rather than legitimate queries, according to reports on X and testing by The Verge.
The issue centers on a cluster of command-like words. When users search for "disregard," instead of returning an AI-generated summary of relevant search results, Google's AI Overview section displays responses like "Got it! Let me know if you need help with anything else" or "No problem at all! How can I help you today?"—the kind of reply you'd expect from a traditional AI chatbot.
The problem extends beyond a single term. Searching "ignore" triggers the response: "Message received! I'm here and ready to help. What would you like to focus on today?" A search for "skip" yields: "It looks like your message was just a test or a typo! Feel free to ask a question, share a prompt, or let me know how I can help you with your tasks today."
Each response treats the search itself as a prompt or test input rather than a genuine query requiring indexed results. The AI Overview section shows nothing substantive—just the chatbot-style message and blank space where search results should appear.
Google has not commented on the issue as of publication. The company's AI Overviews feature, which began rolling out more broadly earlier this year, has faced scrutiny over accuracy and usefulness. This particular bug suggests the system's instruction layer—the set of rules telling the AI when and how to generate summaries—may be conflating search queries with direct user prompts to an AI assistant.
The Verge characterized it as "almost certainly just some kind of funny bug," though the simultaneous failure across multiple semantically similar terms (disregard, ignore, skip) suggests a deeper issue with how the model processes directive language.
