Google Expands Gemini Personal Intelligence to India

Google announced Tuesday that Gemini's Personal Intelligence feature is now available to users in India, marking another expansion of the AI assistant's capabilities to a major market.

The feature allows users to connect their Google accounts—including Gmail and Google Photos—and ask Gemini personalized questions based on their data. A user could query "What are my travel plans for Jaipur?" and receive information extracted from their emails or photos. The system also references recent YouTube videos a user has watched to generate ideas and suggestions.

At launch, the feature is limited to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in India. Google indicated plans to expand access to free users within the coming weeks. The company noted that Gemini will identify sources for its answers, enabling users to verify information if needed.

The rollout to India follows a deliberate global expansion strategy. Gemini's Personal Intelligence launched in beta in the United States in January for select paid tiers. Full availability to all U.S. users occurred in March, with Japan also receiving the feature. The India expansion underscores Google's focus on seeding advanced AI capabilities to one of its largest markets.

Google was transparent about the feature's limitations. The company acknowledged that Gemini does not always correctly interpret context in user data and may make connections between unrelated topics. Timing and nuance present particular challenges. Google provided an example in its announcement: "Seeing hundreds of photos of you at a golf course might lead it to assume you love golf. But it misses the nuance: You don't love golf, but you love your son, and that's why you're there." Users can correct such misinterpretations by telling Gemini directly when it gets context wrong.

Google's pace of AI feature deployment in India has accelerated. In March, the company launched Gemini in Chrome for Indian users. The following week, it enabled restaurant booking through an agentic workflow in partnership with platforms including Zomato, Swiggy, and EazyDiner.
