Daniel Moreno-Gama is now facing federal charges after allegedly traveling from Texas to California with the intent to kill OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. On April 10th, 2026, he was arrested following attacks on both Altman's home and OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco.
At Altman's residence, Moreno-Gama threw a Molotov cocktail at the property. He then proceeded to OpenAI's headquarters, where he attempted to break the glass doors of the building with a chair. According to prosecutors, he stated that he had come to burn down the location and kill anyone inside.
Law enforcement recovered multiple incendiary devices from Moreno-Gama, including a jug of kerosene and a lighter, along with an unregistered firearm. The evidence led to two primary federal charges: attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives, carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years, and possession of an unregistered firearm, carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years.
During the investigation, San Francisco Police Department officers discovered a document titled "Your Last Warning" authored by Moreno-Gama. In this document, he admitted to attempting to kill Altman and advocated against artificial intelligence and for violence against AI company executives and their investors. The document appears to have been part of a three-part series that Moreno-Gama authored and sent via email to individuals at his former college in Texas on April 10th.
The first section, titled "Your Last Warning," contained Moreno-Gama's statement that he killed or attempted to kill Altman. He also wrote that if he were going to advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, he must lead by example. The document listed names and addresses of apparent board members, chief executive officers of AI companies, and investors in the sector.
The second part of the series was titled "Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction" and discussed the purported risks that AI poses to humanity. The third section was a letter addressed to Altman stating, "If by some miracle you live, then I would take this as a sign from the divine to redeem yourself."
The charges represent a significant federal case involving alleged violence motivated by opposition to artificial intelligence development and the executives leading AI companies.
