Allbirds Abandons Footwear for GPU Infrastructure, Rebrands as NewBird AI

In a dramatic departure from its roots as a sustainable sneaker startup, Allbirds announced on April 15 that it will pivot entirely to GPU-as-a-Service infrastructure and rebrand as NewBird AI.

The move caps a long decline for the once-celebrated brand. Allbirds went public in 2021 at a $4 billion valuation, riding high on demand for its minimalist Merino wool footwear. But sales never matched the hype, and years of financial losses followed. On March 30, the company sold its intellectual property to American Exchange Group, a brand management firm also owning Aerosoles and Ed Hardy, for $39 million.

Just one week before that sale, on April 7, Allbirds had announced a canvas cruiser collection and partnership with Pantone. American Exchange Group will now manage that apparel business going forward.

Allbirds itself, however, will pursue a different path entirely. The company has secured a $50 million convertible financing facility to acquire GPU assets and build a fully integrated GPU-as-a-Service and AI-native cloud solutions provider. The rebrand to NewBird AI is pending shareholder approval.

The rationale centers on supply constraints in the AI compute market. Allbirds' press release states: "Enterprises, AI developers, and research organizations are unable to secure the compute resources they need to build, train, and run AI at scale. NewBird AI is being built to help close that gap."

Markets responded enthusiastically: Allbirds stock jumped 400 percent on the announcement.

The Allbirds pivot is not entirely isolated. Boom Supersonic, a company building supersonic aircraft, sells Superpower gas turbines to data centers. Bitcoin mining companies began shifting toward AI infrastructure months ago. Even Nvidia's GPUs originated as gaming PC components.

But Allbirds appears unique in making the jump from consumer apparel to compute infrastructure. The company did not respond to requests for comment.
