OpenAI publishes 10-use-case Codex playbook for finance operations

OpenAI Academy released a practical guide showing how finance teams can deploy Codex to automate routine financial workstreams—from monthly business review narratives to model cleanup and board reporting packs.

The core premise is straightforward: finance teams already have the raw materials—close workbooks, dashboards, forecast updates, prior MBRs, and owner notes. Codex can turn that context into review-ready assets without requiring finance staff to code.

The guide publishes ten use cases with explicit prompt templates, customization guidance, and suggested plugin integrations. Three anchor the framework:

Monthly business review narratives turn close outputs, forecast updates, and owner commentary into CFO-ready stories. Codex reviews workbook tabs, dashboards, and prior MBRs to identify key variances, forecast deltas, risks, and CFO prep questions. Every material number gets a source citation. Teams customize by specifying month, team, audience, and which metrics matter most.

Finance model cleanup and analysis improves model reliability before board reviews. Codex checks workbook structure, formulas, hardcodes, broken links, circular references, sign conventions, period labels, and source tie-outs. It makes safe cleanup changes and flags assumptions requiring finance-owner review, then returns a severity-ranked QA memo alongside a cleaned workbook. Teams define which tabs matter most and which business assumptions cannot change without explicit review.

Recurring CFO and board reporting packs refresh metrics, deltas, charts, and commentary from the latest forecast model, KPI dashboard, prior pack, and owner inputs. Codex summarizes what changed, what remains open, and which sections need executive review.

Each use case includes suggested plugins—Google Drive, SharePoint, Box, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Documents, Slack, Teams, Gmail, Outlook—so Codex can operate across finance tech stacks. The guide emphasizes spending less time on first-pass assembly and more on shaping the narrative, checking numbers, and preparing for decisions.

OpenAI also published an on-demand webinar on using Codex for everyday work. The full playbook is available as a downloadable resource on the OpenAI Academy.
