Google's Natural Language Widget Builder Arrives This Summer

Google unveiled "Create My Widget" on Tuesday, a new Android feature that lets users describe custom widgets in plain English and have Gemini build them. The tool launches this summer on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones.

The mechanics are straightforward: describe what you want, and Gemini generates a personalized dashboard you can resize and place on your home screen. A cyclist who cares only about wind speed and rain can request a weather widget filtered to those metrics. Someone meal-prepping can ask for "three high-protein meal prep recipes every week" and get a custom dashboard to track them.

What distinguishes the feature is its access to external and personal data. Gemini can pull information from the web and integrate with Google apps—Gmail, Calendar—to build unified, context-aware dashboards. The example Google highlighted: planning a family reunion in Berlin. The widget gathers flight and hotel details from your email, surfaces restaurant reservations, and adds a countdown timer.

Ben Greenwood, Director of Product Management for Android Core Experiences, framed it as delegation. "This is like you asking your personal assistant a question, and having them just bring you the answer on repeat," he said during a briefing with reporters. The feature works by asking Gemini about the world (general knowledge, events) and about your personal data—two categories Google says unlock "an enormous number of use cases."

Create My Widget is part of a broader Gemini Intelligence rollout that includes advanced autofill, AI-powered voice dictation for Gboard, and additional features Google didn't detail in the announcement. The initiative reflects a wider industry trend: making AI customization tools accessible to non-technical users. Rather than requiring code, users describe their intent in natural language and let the model interpret and build.
